The AC Cobra is the quintessential American performance car. The bodywork has changed little since 1962, the go-fast parts change all the time, few are made and sold each year, it’s probably outnumbered by its imitators, and it makes almost no sense for anyone – that much power in that small a chassis sitting on an ancient steel tube frame is hard for even seasoned race car drivers to manage. But it’s glorious, isn’t it? You can’t rationalize America’s love for this thing.
But AC is making it a little easier to try. The boutique shop has announced specs on its all-electric model, the AC Cobra Series 4. It put out the equivalent of 617 horsepower – good for a zero-to-sixty jump in 3.8 seconds – from a 54 kWh battery pack good for 200 miles on a charge.
The other performance details are…well, we don’t know. AC has chosen to release only this for the time being. The price tag is known – $223,000. You can reserve one on AC’s website today, should you be so inclined.
Out of your price range? Ours, too. But you might be surprised how many EVs nearly match the Cobra on acceleration – the instantly-available torque of an electric motor tends to give even the most family-friendly of electric vehicles a considerably more powerful jump from a stoplight than most gasoline-powered cars.
