Chevrolet will add an off-road-oriented ZR2 edition to its lineup of Silverado full-size trucks. We’d tell you more, but that’s all Chevy has said so far.
The company’s midsize Colorado ZR2 gives us a pretty solid hint. For that truck, Chevy takes the standard Colorado and adds Multimatic shocks, independently lockable front and rear differentials, and skid plates to protect the undercarriage. The ZR2 rides 2 inches higher than other Colorado models on grippy Goodyear Wrangler Duratec all-terrain tires.
You can buy a Colorado ZR2 with a choice of two engines – a 3.6-liter gasoline V6 or a 2.8-liter Duramax 4-cylinder turbodiesel – though you can’t buy one with the base 4-cylinder engine found on the least expensive Colorados. The ZR2 commands a significant premium, starting at $41,400 compared to the standard Colorado’s $26,395.
A Silverado ZR2 will likely follow a similar theme. The 2021 Silverado can already be purchased in a Custom Trail Boss trim with a Z71 off-road package that includes a 2-inch suspension lift, mud-terrain tires, skid plates, and an automatic locking rear differential.
So we expect to see significant suspension upgrades to set the ZR2 apart. But will it be enough to challenge the Ford F-150 Raptor? We’re waiting to hear more from Chevrolet before we even speculate.
