The 2024 Honda HR-V is a subcompact SUV with a reputation for value, good fuel economy, and agility. After a complete redesign for the 2023 model year, the 2024 HR-V arrives with no notable changes or improvements since its recent reboot.
Once again, it’s available in three trim levels: LX, Sport, and EX-L. The budget-friendly LX starts at $24,100, excluding a $1,325 destination free. Even a fully loaded EX-L struggles to crest the $30,000 barrier.
This second generation of Honda’s smallest SUV is now based on the same platform used in the compact Civic sedan and hatchback. It provides the HR-V with a more sophisticated suspension than the previous Fit-based version, along with a slightly more powerful 158-horsepower 4-cylinder engine coupled to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Front-wheel drive is standard, though all-wheel drive can be added to all three trims for an additional $1,500.
Let’s take a look at what the 2024 Honda HR-V has to offer SUV shoppers.
Passenger Room and Comfort
The HR-V has a strong reputation for exceeding expectations when it comes to passenger space and cargo volume. This holds true for the 2024 model that offers an adult-friendly 37.7 inches of rear legroom. For comparison, a 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross has 32 inches of rear legroom. A 2024 Subaru Crosstrek provides 36.5 inches.
Thanks to its adoption of the Civic’s suspension, the HR-V has a smoother ride than the outgoing model. Luckily, it maintains the same degree of steering accuracy and agility that makes it great for zipping through city traffic or squeezing into tight parking spots. Good outward visibility also aids in placing the HR-V exactly where you want it in snug driving conditions.
Automatic climate control is standard on the LX and Sport, while the EX-L is fitted with dual-zone climate control to avoid squabbles over preferred cabin temperatures. Heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel come standard on the Sport and EX-L.
The range-topping EX-L model also includes leather seating surfaces and a one-touch power moonroof.
Features and Tech
Starting with the entry-level HR-V LX, a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen is positioned in the center of the dashboard and comes with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three USB ports, and a 4-speaker audio system. This same infotainment unit is used in the midrange Sport trim, though it upgrades the stereo to a 6-speaker arrangement.
While it’s not the last word in cutting-edge tech, the touchscreen’s menus are easy to navigate, and we appreciate the retention of physical knobs for frequently used commands like volume controls. The HondaLink smartphone app — which allows for geofencing, service appointment reminders, and stolen vehicle location — is standard on all three trims.
The EX-L brings with it a larger 9-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone connectivity, wireless device charging, and an 8-speaker stereo. Another clever technology worth mentioning is the Honda’s Walk Away Auto Lock. Do you frequently forget to lock your vehicle? This system automatically locks the HR-V’s doors and tailgates when the vehicle is parked, and it determines the key fob is more than five feet away. This is standard on the Sport and EX-L.
Materials and Design
Small and value-conscious SUVs don’t usually spoil you with frills and luxury touches. Yet the design of the HR-V cabin and materials used throughout are a cut above many direct rivals.
We’re especially fond of the hidden air vents behind plastic mesh trim spanning the dashboard’s width. This stylish touch also appears in the latest Honda Civic and the midsize Accord sedan. Active noise cancellation also helps ensure the interior is quieter and a more calming place to spend time.
Seat comfort itself is equally commendable. This is true whether you select the cloth seats of the LX and Sport or upgrade to the perforated leather upholstery offered in the EX-L.
One thing curiously missing from every HR-V is rear air vents — a quirky oversight in a carefully thought-out cabin.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
The HR-V has 24.4 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the split-folding rear seatback. This is about average for a subcompact SUV. With the second row folded, space expands to 55.1 cubic feet.
One notable absence is the “Magic Seat” used in the first-gen HR-V. It not only folded flat to boost rear cargo space, but the lower seat cushion could also flip upward for storing bulky items directly behind the first row. The 2024 HR-V is still handy for cargo-toting needs; we just wish this unique selling point carried over.
