Lucid (Partially) Answers Tesla With $7,500 Lease Discount

2022 Lucid Air Grand TouringThe federal government has launched a revised program that offers a tax rebate of up to $7,500 on many non-luxury electric cars. Builders of luxury electric cars are scrambling to answer with a similar discount of their own.

Tesla made waves in early January with a huge round of discounts. The move cut prices so much that most examples of its two best-selling cars now qualify for the tax incentive. Luxury rival Lucid doesn’t build any cars inexpensive enough for that plan to work. But the company wants in on the action any way it can get in.

Lucid has now announced a discount matching the credit — $7,500 – for anyone who leases a Lucid Air sedan through Lucid Financial Services.

The discount is structured as a $7,500 payment on the first month of the lease, lowering future monthly payments.

The Lucid Air is a large, luxurious sedan targeted squarely at the Tesla Model S. With prices starting at  $87,400 and stretching over $249,000, it’s pricey.

But it boasts the longest EPA-certified range of any electric car (up to 520 miles in some configurations). Lucid claims the top-of-the-line Air Sapphire can get from 0-60 mph in less than 2 seconds with no special preparation – a dig at Tesla’s claim that its Model S Plaid will eventually do the same trick with the help of a planned future tire upgrade.
