BMW has announced a recall for about 16,000 SUVs that may be carrying defective airbags. The recall affects about 9,500 iX electric vehicles and 6,300 gas-powered X1 SUVs from model years 2022-2023.
In documents filed with government safety officials, BMW explains that the vehicles “have been manufactured with a driver air bag that may not have been produced according to specifications by the supplier.” That might prevent the airbag from deploying as expected in an accident.
BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the concern. Engineers discovered the problem during crash testing of a new model. That developmental model used an airbag BMW had already put into production on some SUVs. When the airbag in the test “deployed in an unusual manner,” engineers decided to recall already-produced vehicles that use the same airbag.
Dealers will replace the airbag to correct the problem. The fix, as always with recall repairs, comes free of charge.
Manufacturers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. Check the easy VIN tool at our recall center to find out if your car is one of them.
