Kia advises owners of nearly 380,000 vehicles to park outside to limit the risk of fire while the company prepares a recall to fix their cars. The recall affects Sportage SUVs and Cadenza sedans from model years 2017 through 2021. Vehicles with Kia’s Smart Cruise Control system are not part of the recall.
A potential short circuit in the brake control unit of the cars could lead to a fire, Kia says, even if the key is not in the vehicle at the time. Kia is aware of no fires or injuries caused by the defect. Owners might see tire pressure, anti-lock brake, or other warning lights, or smell a burning or melting odor before the problem leads to a fire.
The problem has a simple fix — dealers will replace fuses in the electrical junction box to eliminate the risk.
