Rivian has recalled 24,214 R1S SUVs and R1T trucks from model year 2025 because, when their more advanced, hands-free, driver assistance software is working at very low speeds, they may hit the vehicle in front of them.
The company tells federal safety regulators that it knows of one “one-time functional limitation due to a misclassification.” A Rivian failed to register the presence of a vehicle in front of it. So did a distracted driver. There were no injuries in the collision, Rivian says, and the Rivian remained drivable. The company has not said whether the other car also remained drivable, but given the low speed, it seems likely.
Rivian says it has already fixed most affected vehicles with a software update. However, the few Rivian owners who have not already received the patch will receive a recall notice telling them to install it or have Rivian do so.
Millions of people miss recall notices every year and unknowingly drive recalled vehicles. Our recall center has an easy VIN tool to help you find out if your car needs any free safety repairs.
