Introduction

The 2022 Polestar 2 is an all-electric car that straddles the genres. It has a raised ride height similar to an SUV, yet sports a sleek sedan-like profile while adding a practical hatchback. The 2022 model year marks the second year of existence for the Polestar 2 — and if you think it looks like a Volvo, there’s a good reason for that. Polestar started out in Sweden as an independent tuner specializing in Volvos. Then it became part of Volvo, and when that company was bought by Geely (a Chinese conglomerate), it was spun off into a separate marque producing all-electric vehicles. That said, the Polestar 1 was actually a limited-edition sports coupe with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drivetrain. There are strong Volvo design elements in the Polestar 2, both inside and out, along with many shared components like infotainment systems and switchgear.

This 2022 model year also sees the debut of a more affordable Single Motor version with a maximum range of 270 miles. The Dual Motor model with all-wheel drive (AWD) is capable of 249 miles. Using a DC fast charger, replenishing either car takes about 30 minutes to go from 10% capacity to 80%. That’s not the quickest (the Hyundai Ioniq 5 shaves 10 minutes from that time), but still within the realms of acceptability. The world of electric vehicles is not so well-defined as the one with combustion engines, so alternatives to a Polestar 2 could be a Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 5, or Ford Mustang Mach-E.

KBB Review Highlights

Not only is Polestar a relative newcomer among electric vehicles, but it’s also a less familiar name in general. There’s still a sense of competence and capability to the Polestar 2, however, thanks to that Volvo connection. And build quality is perfectly fine, with cabin materials chosen for sustainability as much as looks — there’s simulated leather, for example — while standard equipment includes plenty of tech, convenience touches, and safety features. The slightly raised demeanor of the Polestar 2 also contributes to easy entries and exits.

The new-for-2022 Single Motor Polestar 2 sends a fairly modest 231 hp to just the rear wheels. This is the version with the best range, though, and such muscle is fine for driving around the city and suburbs. The Dual Motor variant has all-wheel drive and hustles along nicely with 408 horsepower. We have found the Polestar 2’s ride to be somewhat firm, so we’d advise potential buyers to keep this in mind during test drives. That does have an advantage on twisty roads, though. One-pedal driving is another Polestar 2 asset, where setting brake energy regeneration to its highest level slows the vehicle down enough to not require touching the brake pedal, unless a more urgent stop is necessary.

Space up front is fine, and the seats are sufficiently comfortable. Meanwhile, the rear legroom of 34 inches and a sloping roof line make life less than ideal for adults of average size sitting in the back. The rear seats split and fold in a 60/40 fashion, and we like the hatchback arrangement with cargo space going from around 13 cubic feet to a maximum of 38.7 cubic feet. There’s also a small amount of stowage space under the hood.

Regarding options, the Plus Pack adds a large sunroof, Pilot Assist adaptive cruise control, and a Harmon Kardon sound system. The Dual Motor model is also eligible for a Performance Pack that includes 20-inch alloy wheels, grippy Continental SportContact summer tires, Brembo brakes, and Öhlins adjustable shock absorbers.
